John's film
Swinging (John Porter, 1981, 2 minutes, silent) A Camera Dance, and a companion piece to John's earlier film, Angel Baby (1979). John is seen swinging on a swing that he built in his studio. He shot the film by himself with the camera many feet away, so while swinging, he continuously activated the camera one frame at a time by holding a remote control with a long cable. He could shoot each single frame at the precise second that he swung past a chosen position in the arc of his swinging action, thereby creating illusions of him being frozen in mid-air, or flying around in a circle. And being dressed in white against a black background, and using one-second time exposures on each frame, he created the visual effect of him seen as brush strokes. A one-shot film, shot non-stop within an hour. |
